Cages and things we put in them |
|
Cuttlebone
The hard backing on the cuttlebone, if ingested in pieces, can be sharp enough to cause perforations within the bird's digestive system. Scrape cuttlebone onto food rather than putting the whole piece in the cage.
Bedding and Cage Litter Do not use walnut shell litter or corn cob litter for the bottom of your birds' cages. If they ingest these materials they can die. There have been reports of sudden deaths among macaws, amazons, and other parrots, including a baby senegal. In the case of the baby senegal, the owner thought the parents could not reach the bedding through the grating on the bottom of the cage. They must have been able to reach it and fed the walnut shells to the baby. In documented cases, necropsy showed bleeding in the bowel and accumulation of the bedding in the gizzard. Also, do not use cedar bedding. It is hazardous to birds. Pine bedding shows the fewest problems, but make absolutely sure your bird is not eating it. Carefresh supposedly is okay if ingested, but has to be changed regularly even if it appears dry as it can harbor bacteria.

Cage Covers |
|
Cage Covers pose a similar problem if any lose strings get around a bird's leg. One woman reported that she used a towel to cover her birds' cage. One bird had gotten a string so tightly around his leg that he had gnawed at his own foot (and his mate helped him gnaw on it) to try to get free. He gnawed off two toes and was still stuck. When the owner came home she cut off the string, but the sudden release of pressure caused the severed blood vessels to gush blood. She did not have any blood coagulant on hand like Quik Stop. She used household flour to stem the flow (this is a good home remedy in emergencies to stop bleeding by the way).

latches on the doors of the cages, mine swing up the down into a slot then slide over,
Nila has a habit of hanging on the door and sliding down it and has caught his foot in the swing arm thing twice,
I took it off and turned it around so that it is down not up and he can't slide his little foot into it.
